Detective Division Page 1 of 3 1/16.0 (REV 6/98) SERGEANT ORIENTATION The purpose of this order is to provide basic t opics and consis tent information for the orientation of sergeants who have been newly assigned to the De tective Division. I. General A. As soon as practical followi ng assignment to the Detective D ivision, each sergeant shall be given an orient ation to include (minimally) t he following: 1. Introduction to the chief deput y of Investigative Services, the division commander, executive offi cer, executive secretary, bur eau commanders and the sergeant ’s bureau staff. 2. Copy of the division organi zational and staffing charts. 3. Copy of the goals and objective s of the service area and div ision. 4. Copy of the division personnel roster, emergency personnel r oster, call-out roster, and bureau person nel evaluation due dates. 5. Issuance of a calling card number, pager, vehicle, cell phon e number, and bureau keys. 6. Review of Operations Orders, o vertime policy for bureau pers onnel, vacation management policy, inj ury and illness prevention progr am information, and the bureau’ s emergency procedures. 7. Explanation of the chain of c ommand, dress code as it pertai ns to bureau personnel, bureau case assignm ent criteria, work hours a nd days off, and areas of responsibility. 8. Scheduling of appropriate in- service training courses. II. Responsibilities A. It shall be the responsibilit y of the new sergeant’s bureau commander to ensure the introductions to the personnel listed above are acco mplished within the first week of the se rgeant’s assignment and that the remainder of the orientation is complet ed within four weeks of assignment . Detective Division Page 2 of 3 1/16.0 (REV 6/98) III. Orientation Check List A. The Detective Division ser geant orientation check list (Appe ndix A) shall be used to record the or ientation process. B. Any topics that are covered dur ing the orientation that are not listed on the check list shall be synopsized on either the back of the check list or on an attachment. C. Upon completion of the check list, each of the topics shall be initialed by the new sergeant acknowledging the orientation. The person who conducts the orientation shall date and print their name at the bottom of the check list and shall forwar d it to the division commander. D. The check list shall be mainta ined in the sergeant’s divisio n personnel file.
