BACKGROUND INVESTIGATOR
The purpose of this order is to describe the duties and respons ibilities of a background
investigator. I. General
The background investigator wor ks under the direct supervision of the
administrative sergeant of the Div ision of Training and Reserve Forces. The
background investigator is res ponsible for the complete investi gation of all
reserve deputy sheriff candidates . The background investigator determines each
candidate’s acceptability relati ve to state and local laws and regulations, POST
mandates, and county and department al guidelines. The backgroun d
investigator’s general duties and responsibilities include the following:
A. Obtains questionnaires of perso nal history from candidates t o assist in the
investigative process.
B. Contacts which include curr ent and previous employers, neigh bors,
spouses, relatives, and personal references supplied by each ca ndidate,
are generally conducted by mail.
C. Investigates credit referenc es and financial accounts of can didates.
D. Investigates the medical hist ories of candidates and contact s physicians
when necessary.
E. Investigates criminal records of candidates including city, county, state,
and federal records by pers onal contact and/or telephone.
F. Investigates driving record s and license validity of candida tes through the
Department of Motor Vehicles.
G. Maintains lists of eligible candidates for the positions of reserve deputy
sheriff.
H. Maintains and updates f iles on all candidates.
I. Coordinates personnel record keeping with the Personnel Secti on of the
Administrative Division.

J. Schedules candidates for pre- acceptance medical examinations which
include psychological testing , drug screening, and a polygraph.
K. Completes an exec utive summary of each applicant at the conc lusion of
the investigation and forwards the package, without recommendat ion, to
the reserve coordinator.
