Detective Division Page 1 of 2 1/02.0 (REV 4/97) PERSONNEL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The purpose of this order is to establish the duties and respon sibilities of Detective Division personnel. I. Division Commander A. The Detective Division commander , (Sheriff’s Captain) is res ponsible to the Chief Deputy of Investigativ e Services for the management and direction of the operations of t he Detective Division. The div ision commander plans, advises, counsels , and directs major division activities; formulates special orders, policies and proc edures, and ensure s compliance with those orders ; and coordinates major staff and line functions and ensures the functi ons are discharged effectively . The division commander may supervise major and/or sensitive crime scenes and investigations, officer-inv olved shootings, media contacts , and coordination of events with various agencies. II. Executive Officer A. The executive officer (Sher iff’s Lieutenant) is responsible to the division commander for assisting in the management and direction of the operations of the Detective Divis ion. The executive officer upd ates division orders and policies for approval by the division commander; adv ises, counsels, and assists in major d ivision activities; coordinates administrative staff functions; c oordinates in-service training for staff and line personnel; coordinates repl acement and assignment of divis ion vehicles; and assumes command o f the division in the absence of the division commander. III. Bureau Commanders A. Bureau commanders (Sheriff’s Lieutenant) are responsible to the division commander. The bureau commander ove rsees the operation of their assigned bureau; make inspections to ensure compliance by burea u personnel of policies and procedur es; provide administrative su pport to the bureau including the preparat ion of the budget; provide dir ection and Detective Division Page 2 of 2 1/02.0 (REV 4/97) coordination of activities in m ajor investigations or events; s erve as liaison for the bureau in multi-jurisdi ctional investigations; and prov ide the division commander with timely verbal and wr itten reports of significant investigations, events, and dev iations from standard operations . IV. Bureau Supervisors A. Bureau supervisors (Sheriff’ s Sergeant) are responsible to t he bureau commander for the complete and p roper disposition of all duties assigned to their respective bureaus; ins pection of personnel and equipm ent; monitor the functions of the bur eau ensuring adherence to polic ies and procedures; review and assign case s to bureau personnel; review investigative progress and final dispositions; approve cases fo r submission to the District Attor ney’s Office for prosecution; p rovide direction and assistance for inve stigators as necessary; evalua te and report personnel perform ance; and perform supervisor functions for personnel assigned to the bureau. V. Detective A. Detectives are responsible to their bureau sergeants, and in the absence of the sergeant, the bureau comm ander, for the effective and ef ficient disposition of assigned cases; i nvestigation of crimes; identif ication and apprehension of criminals; recover y of stolen property; prepara tion of case reports; testimony in court; and pe rformance of other duties as required. VI. Clerical Support Staff A. Clerical personnel are direc tly responsible to the bureau co mmander unless specifically delegated to the bureau sergeant. They shal l perform all clerical duties including typing, word processing, transcri ption, filing, answering phones, and related dutie s as required in an efficien t and effective manner.
