COMMANDER
The purpose of this order is to describe the duties and respons ibilities of the
commander of the division of T raining and Reserve Forces.
I. General
The commander has the responsibi lity to ensure that the personn el of the
department are prepared to dischar ge their duties in the most e fficient and
effective manner possible. Thi s task is accomplished by remaini ng cognizant of
departmental training needs and functions, the training require ments of State
regulatory agencies, and legal m andates. Additionally, the comm ander is
responsible for the development and maintenance of a well-train ed force of
reserve deputy sheriffs and to o versee the coordination of all activities in which
they are involved. The primary duties and responsibilities of t his position include:
A. Plan and direct t he overall activities of the division which include the
formation and implementation of p rograms, policies, procedures, and
special directives.
B. Oversee all training within t he department including the coo rdination of
training functions with other department divisions, County depa rtments,
local agencies, and stat e and federal agencies.
C. Responsible for the recruitmen t, selection, training, and ma intenance of
reserve deputy sheriffs as a fo rce to supplement general law en forcement
and custodial activities of regul ar deputy sheriffs, as well as a source for
other forms of law enforcement r elated services to the communit y at
various special events.
D. Manage the division budget and ensure the efficient and effe ctive uses of
personnel, equipment, and capital resources to improve existing programs
and prepare for future departmental needs.
