Sheriff’s Security Officer
The purpose of this Order is to outline the duties and responsi bilities of Sheriff’s
Security Officers assigned to the Security Services Bureau.
I. General
Security Officers assigned to the S heriff’s Security Services B ureau may be
assigned to any and all buildings /locations that contract servi ces with the
Security Services Bureau. Sher iff’s Security Officers are unde r the direct
supervision of Security Services Bureau supervisors. Sheriff’s Security
Officers’ primary duty is the secu rity of locations or faciliti es as directed by the
Sheriff and shall be limited to t he physical security and prote ction of properties
owned, operated, controlled, or ad ministered by the entity cont racting security
services. The Sheriff’s Securi ty Officer is responsible for bu reau
administrative duties, completi on of reports, citizen assistanc e, crime
prevention at assigned locations , and enforcement of criminal s tatutes.
II. Authorities
Sheriff Security Officers are P ublic Officers as defined by Pen al Code Section
831.4. The powers of arrest are defined in Security Services B ureau
Operations Order 01/10.
III. General Duties
During the normal course of dutie s, Security Officer general du ties could
include:
A. Being a visible deterrent i n the facilities/locations they h ave been assigned
to protect.
B. Monitoring the closed circ uit television and alarms.
C. Checking the perim eter and parking lots of the buildings per iodically for
unauthorized vehicles/persons.

D. Summoning a sworn officer, eit her immediately available or t o be radio
dispatched, for appropriate ac tion whenever the need for law en forcement
becomes necessary.
E. Answering the telephones and pr ovide assistance whenever req uired.
F. Receiving and signing for a ll mail and packages, notifying t he addressee of
the package arrival.
G. Completing offense reports and incident reports from informa tion supplied
via mail, telephone, or in person.
H. Recording citizen complaints . Direct citizens with complain ts against
departmental personnel to a Secur ity Services Bureau Supervisor or to
Internal Affairs.
I. Notifying a Security Service s Bureau Supervisor as soon as p ractical upon
receiving complimentary reports on Security Services Bureau per sonnel
for outstanding performance or ser vice which come from citizens or other
agencies.
J. Checking subjects in the Sacr amento County Criminal Justice Information
System and California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System for
outstanding wants/warrants.
K. Enforcing local parking ordi nances with the issuance of park ing citations.
L. Issuing citations for misdemeanors and infractions.
IV. Additional Duties
During the normal course of dut ies, Security Officer additional duties could
include:
A . V i s i t o r C o n t r o l :
1. The Security Officer shall proc ess all visitors coming into or leaving
protected premises. This include s, but is not limited, the iss uance of
visitor badges.
2. The Security Officer will direc t all visitors entering the p rotected
building(s) to the appropria te office or person.
3. The Security Officer shall ve rify that all visitors entering the secured
facilities (i.e. vendors) are on official business.

B. The Security Officer shall be responsible for following all opening/closing
procedures of entrusted facilitie s. This includes, but is not limited to, the
securing of all entrances/exits to the building and making cert ain that all
alarms are properly activat ed/deactivated.
V. Duty Restrictions
Sheriff’s Security Officers assi gned to their respective facili ties shall not:
A. Operate any Sheriff’s vehicl es in code 3 status. When using an
emergency equipped Sheriff’s vehicl e, all Sheriff’ s Security Of ficers shall
comply with the rules of the r oad and operate Sheriff’s vehicle s in
compliance with department policy.
B. Wear a Sheriff’s Security Offi cer uniform outside SSB protec ted
buildings/premises except while on assigned duties.
C. Exercise peace officer power s while on duty while serving in the Sheriff’s
Security Officer capacity. This is applicable for those Securi ty Officers
who also concurrently serve as a Reserve Sheriff’s Deputies.
