26.1 PURPOSE: The purpose of this directive is to establish procedures for the handling and collecting of property/evidence taken into custody for evidence processing, safekeeping, and disposal. The procedures are also established to ensure consistency in the safekeeping of property and evidence stored in the Property/Evidence Unit (hereinafter referred to as the Property Unit) and to ensure compliance with mandates set forth in the Florida State Statutes (FSS). Strict statutory compliance will ensure the Department is carrying out its mission of protecting and serving the citizens of Plantation by aiding in the successful prosecution of criminal cases. It also ensures that found and/or stolen property is returned to its rightful owners and that contraband is disposed of in accordance with statutory requirements.
