Subject: Segway Operations
This order consists of the following:
1. Purpose

3. Procedures
1. Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to establish the responsibilities and training of agency
personnel assigned to operate a Segway. Segways will be used to increase mobility and
visibility and to deter c rime.
2. Definitions
A. Segway - a two -wheeled motorized personal vehicle consisting of a platform for the
feet mounted above an axle and an upright post surmounted by handles.
3. Procedures
A. Training
1. Agency personnel shall successfully complete an approved training course
prior to operating a Segway .
a. Training will include the following:
1. Functional knowledge of the Segway
2. Basic Segway riding techniques
3. Segway riding etiquette
4. Segway safety
b. Training will be documented with the Training Section.
B. Safety Procedures
1. Safe riding practices will be adhered to at all times .
2. The Segway will not be operated on stairs, escalators, or moving sidewalks .
3. Agency personnel will be alert when riding the Segway and always be
prepared to stop .
4. Agency personnel shall keep both hands on the grips and both feet on the
platform when in motion.
5. Agency personnel shall n ot leave the keys with an unattended Segway ,
except in exigent circumstances.

6. Agency personnel shall not leave a Segway unattended in a location where it
could become a hazard to other vehicles or pedestrians , except in exigent
circumstances.
7. Agency personnel shall not engage in activities that may be distract ing when
riding .
8. Segways will not be utilized as an emergency vehicle to engage in vehicle
pursuits.
9. Agency personnel shall not transport another person on the Segway.
a. Agency personnel shall only operate agency issued or approved
Segways.
C. Equipment
Segway s will be equipped with the following minimum equipment :
1. Headlight
2. Front strobe red/blue l ight
3. Siren
4. Cargo bag s
D. Maintenance
1. Agency p ersonnel shall maintain Segways in a clean, safe and good working
condition at all times. Any damage or inoperable conditions shall be
documented and reported to the Section Commander, or designee .
2. Agency personnel shall be responsible for inspecting the Segway prior to
use.
3. The Section Commander , or designee, shall be responsible for scheduling
preventative m aintenance.
