Subject: Remington 870 Ca re and Cleaning
1. Care
Cleaning and lubricating will be done approximately every month and after firing.
Immediate care and cleaning will take place when exposed to adverse field
conditions.
2. Shotgun Field Stripping
A. Make sure the shotgun is unloa ded and point it in a safe direction. Work the
Fore-end to the rear and physically check the chamber, carrier , and magazine
tube to make sure it is unloaded. (Make sure your finger is not on the trigger.)
B. Move the Fore-end half way to rear, remove ma gazine tube cap, and then pull
barrel forward off the receiver.
C. From the bottom side of the receiver, push the left shell latch release located
on the underside of the receiver. Pull Fore-end assembly and remove the
breech bolt assembly from the recei ver.
D. The shotguns will be broken down into four major components:
1. Receiver assembly
2. Fore-end assembly
3. Breech Bolt assembly and slide assembly
4. Barrel
This is as far as a weapon will be disassembled at the user’s level.
3. Cleaning
A. Barrel should be cleaned from the bre ech forward, using a cleaning rod,
12ga. bore brush and cleaning patches. After the barrel is cleaned, a light
coat of a cleaning lubricant, such as CLP Break Free or equivalent should be
placed in the bore. By soaking the patch, placing the patch on the cleaning
rod and pushing it through the bore from the chamber end. Do not soak or
submerge receiver or trigger group in cleaning solution.

B. Breech Bolt assembly and slide assembly will be cleaned with appropriate
solvent and a light coat of lubricant will be placed on these parts.
C. Receiver can be brushed out but will not be submerged in the cleaning tank.
If it needs to be detail stripped, an agency armorer shall clean this part.
4. Shotgun Reassemble
After all above parts have been cleaned and lubricated, the weapon will be
assembled in reverse order as disassembly.
A. Hold receiver in hand. Place Fore-end assembly on magazine tube. Place
breech bolt assembly and slide assembly on the slots located on the Fore-
end rails. Push the Fore -end assembly into receiver by pushing in on the
slide latches located on the underside of the receiver. The right shell latch
needs to be pressed in first as the Fore -end assembly is moved slightly to the
rear about ¼ of an inch. Then press the left shell latch to allow the assembly
to move into its proper place.
B. After Fore-end assembly is in place, press the action bar release and pull the
Fore-end assembly half way to the rear. This will allow the barrel to be
properly p laced on the receiver . Confirm the barrel ejector base cut out is
properly placed around the ejector base. If this is not done, the ejector base
will be damaged and the shotgun will have to be taken out of service. Then
replace the magazine cap. The ca p should be finger tight.
C. A function test will be performed after reassembling, i.e.; confirm the weapon
is unloaded, point the weapon in a safe direction, work the Fore -end to the
forward position, pull the trigger and listen for the hammer to fall, k eep the
trigger to the rear as you work the Fore-end again. Then slowly release the
trigger and you should feel and hear the sear reset. Place the weapon on
safe and there should be no movement in the trigger . (A light coat of oil will
be applied to the surface of the weapon.)
