ORANGE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE GENERAL ORDER Effective Date: November 8, 2017  Amends – GO 18.1.6 (May 7, 2010) Number: 18.1.6 Distribution: All Personnel Review Month: November Reviewing Authority: HRD / Training Subject: Relationship to O utside Academies This order consists of the following: 1. Purpose 2. Policy 3. Procedures 1. Purpose The purpose of this policy is to effectively use funds allocated for the training function and to provide for joint cooperation in upgrading the standar ds of law enforcement personnel in Central Florida. 2. Policy The agency shall use law enforcement academies in the Central Florida area that meet state law and the policies of the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission. Recruits are sent to the Valencia College School of Public Safety and Seminole State College Criminal Justice Division for basic law enforcement certification. When necessary, other academies such as the Criminal Justice Academy of Osceola, the Eastern Florida State College Public Safety Institute , and other institutes throughout the state will be utilized in order to provide in -service training programs for agency employees. 3. Procedures A. The Training Section is responsible for serving as liaison between outside l aw enforcement academies and the Sheriff's Office. It is the Training Section’s responsibility to maintain an open flow of communication and to provide advice and information so that these academies may improve the level of training as needed. B. The Lieutenant of the Training Section shall maintain liaison with the Seminole State College Training Director as well as the Valencia College School of Public Safety Training Director. C. The Training Section shall render assistance to the respective law enforcement training academies by providing the use of the Orange County Sheriff's Office Range and the LEVO facility whenever possible. D. Agency personnel may be assigned on a full -time basis as training coordinators or instructors at any training academy upon the direction or with the concurrence of the Sheriff. E. On an annual basis, after consultation with other criminal justice agencies, the 18.1.6, Page 2 of 2 Sheriff shall determine the level of financial assistance to Valencia College School of Public Safety . F. The a gency shall adhere to the terms of the interlocal agreement establishing its legal obligations to Valencia College School of Public Safety . G. Upon graduation from an accredited training academy , agency personnel shall be trained under the auspices of the FTEP Coordinator or his/her designee. Agency policies, procedures, special rules and regulations shall be covered in this training, which will be conducted during the Deputy Orientation Program . H. Agen cy input to the academy program shall be provided by the following: 1. Training Section Commander 2. Sheriff's representative serving on the Valencia College School of Public Safety Advisory Board
