This order consists of the following:

1. Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to distinguish between the benefits of a part -time employee,
school crossing guard, and consultant/contract worker.
2. Definitions
A. Part-time Employee - an employee who is regularly scheduled on a permanent
basis to work less than forty (40) hours per week.
B. Consultant /Contract Worker s - an individual or firm retained on a fee basis to
provide a specialized service.
3. Policy
A. Consultants /Contract workers are exempt from fringe benefi ts including but not
limited to insurance benefits, holiday pay , and leave benefits unless otherwise
specified by the Sheriff or applicable law.
B. Part-time employees (not including School Crossing Guards) are pr ovided limited
benefits such as: Florida Retirement System (FRS) accruals, opportunity to
participate in the agency’s deferred compensation program, educational incentive,
longevity pay, shift differential, and some holiday pay.
1. Part-time employees will receive 40 v acation hours per fiscal year. The
vacation hours will not roll over each fiscal year. The employee must have
worked 1,040 hours the previous fiscal year to be eligible for this benefit, in
accordance with GO 4.1.2 .
2. Part-time employees will receive holiday compensation, if the holiday is
physically worked, in accordance with GO 4.1.2 .
C Part-time agency members serve at the pleasure of the Sherif f and may be
disciplined or terminated without an appeals process.
