If an investigator has never gone through the procedure of obtaining a walk warrant, he or she can receive assistance by asking each person in the process what the next step is. When asking for assistance with a walk warrant, an investigator should indicate when the warrant is needed-ASAP or within two or three days. Additional resources for help in issuing a walk warra nt are listed at the conclusion of this Training Bulletin. 2 Walk Warrant Procedure, Index Number II-F Walk Warrant Procedure In order to obtain a walk warrant, an in vestigator performs the following steps: 1. The investigator prepares the case and presents it to a charging district attorney for review, requesting the case be charged. 2. The charging district attorney reviews the case an d, if he or she agrees that the case should be charged, prepares a complaint. 3. The investigator and the charging dist rict attorney sign the complaint. 4. The investigator completes a Warrant Informa tion Sheet, obtained in the DA's Office, and places the Warrant Information Sheet, the comp laint, and the supporting documents estab- lishing probable cause for the warrant into the Walk Warrant Box. The Walk Warrant Box is located in the Complaint Unit of the District Attorney's Office, Room 225, Wiley W. Manuel Court House, 661 Washington Street. 3 19 May 03 ● Oakland Police Department Walk Warrant Procedure (ASAP) If an investigator needs a walk warrant entered as soon as possible, the in vestigator hand carries the file through the system by completing the following steps: 1. Perform steps one through three ab ove, Walk Warrant Procedure. 2. The investigator completes a Warrant Informa tion Sheet and hand carries it along with the complaint to the District Attorney's Complaint Unit secretary, who will complete the file. 3. The investigator delivers the completed file to the New Complaints Clerk located in the Clerk's Office on the bridge between the Police Administration Building and the Wiley W. Manuel Court House. 4. The New Complaints Clerk gives the file a number, stamps the file, places the file in a folder, and delivers the folder to the CORPUS Section. 5. The CORPUS Section enters the information into the system, generates an unsigned computer arrest warrant, and returns the file to the investigator. 6. The investigator locates a judge to review and sign the warrant. 7. After the warrant is signed, the investigator deliv ers the signed warrant and the file to the New Complaints Clerk. 8. The New Complaints Clerk forwards the signed warrant and file to the Corpus Section. 9. The CORPUS Section enters the warrant into the Automated Warrant System (AWS) as an active warrant.
