I. K-9 (Canine) General Order #49 Effective: 05/17/2023 CFA 14.02, 14.11, 14.12 Revised 05/25/2023 APPROVED: CHIEF CARLOS NORIEGA POLICY The purpose of this policy is to provide the North Bay Village Police Department (NBVPD) with the service of trained police work dogs, helping ensure the safety of all officers and the public while conducting police duties such as building searches, area searches, crowd control, and fleeing subjects. DEFINITIONS: K-9 Handler(s) - Police officer trained to handle a Department Police Work-dog (K-9). K-9 Team(s) - Trained canine Handler and the assigned Department Police Work-dog (K-9 Team). High-Risk K-9 Deployment - Use of a K-9 Team for criminal apprehension purposes during instances where situational information and factors lead officers to believe the offender at large is armed with a firearm. Routine K-9 Deployment - Use of a K-9 Team for criminal apprehension purposes during instances where situational information and factors do not indicate the offender at large is armed with a firearm.
