MOUNTAIN VIEW POLICE DEPARTMENT SPECIAL SERVICES SECTION TRAINING AND INFORMATION BULLETIN PAGE 1 OF 3 CONFIDENTIAL • FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT USE ONLY 2020 DATE: March 21, 2020 BULLETIN NUMBER: 20-05 SUBJECT: Decontamination of Assigned Equipment INFORMATION: Law enforcement officers around the world are at risk of exposure to COVID-19 as they interact with the public. We are providing the following guidance on the decontamination of department issued equipment from potential COVID-19 exposure. Current evidence suggests that the COVID-19 virus may remain viable for hours to days on surfaces made from a variety of materials. The department has provided several cleaning/disinfecting supplies including PDI Sani-Hands Sanitizing Wipes. We recommend using these wipes to disinfect your Axon BWC, CEW, Radio, handcuffs and all other equipment. MOUNTAIN VIEW POLICE DEPARTMENT SPECIAL SERVICES SECTION TRAINING AND INFORMATION BULLETIN PAGE 2 OF 3 CONFIDENTIAL • FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT USE ONLY 2020 Your equipment should be wiped with the Sani-Cloth but not immersed or soaked with risk of allowing moisture to seep into the device. Allow the device to dry before use. When handling CEW's during this process, they should be placed on safe, all live cartridges removed and wiped separately. Use caution when disinfecting CEW cartridges, pointing the cartridge in a safe direction, and using only a damp disinfecting cloth to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD). Allow CEW cartridges to dry before reinserting them into the CEW. The dry time will vary depending on humidity and airflow around the device. MOUNTAIN VIEW POLICE DEPARTMENT SPECIAL SERVICES SECTION TRAINING AND INFORMATION BULLETIN PAGE 3 OF 3 CONFIDENTIAL • FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT USE ONLY 2020 For your Motorola (hand-pack and in-car radio), wipe the microphone/speaker first, working your way down to the radio making sure to wipe down the volume and channel dials. Handcuffs should always be wiped after every use. If the handcuffs require a more thorough cleaning then the wipes can provide, County EMS and MVFD personnel can provide you with a stronger cleaning solution. We have provided cleaning disinfectant bottles and disposable rags around the department. We are requesting that staff participate in cleaning the high touch areas and workstations throughout the department in order to minimize our risk. We are attempting to increase the frequency of the cleaning beyond the janitorial services; therefore, please sign the sheet attached to clipboards in your area after each time you clean your workspace. This will allow everyone to know when the area was last cleaned. Additionally, cleaning supplies for the vehicles are on the supplies cart within the Motor Locker. Patrol personnel should clean their vehicles during pre-shift and post shift inspections. Please follow the guidelines provided. They are meant to help keep you, your partners, and ultimately your families safe. Prepared by: Sgt. Fernando Maldonado Approved by: Lt. Dan Frohlich
