MOUNTAI POLICE VIEW 2019 CPT Driver Training July/August Driver Training - High Speed Response Driving Practical Outline Overall Objective: This training presented by the Driver Training staff is designed to refresh officers on response driving techniques such as the five-step method of cornering, radio use, and also refresh driver awareness in pursuit and everyday driving during evening and night operational hours. Additional refresher on low speed driving skills. Safety Procedures: No guns, ammunition, batons, CED's or OC spray will be allowed in the training area. Training vehicles will not have weapons, rifles or less lethal shotgun deliver systems contained in them. A weapons and equipment inspection will be conducted for all students before training begins, after the lunch break, if a student or instructor leaves the designated training area and any other time deemed necessary. Introduction: (Driver Instructors) 1) Introduction of instructors 2) Overview of training class a. Goals and objective of class b. Pursuit police - 314 c. Officer response to calls - 316 3) Safety procedures and brief. a. No guns, ammo, batons, OC, shotguns/rifles, knives. b. Inspections and show designated safety/training area. c. Anyone with pre-existing injuries. d. No horse play. e. Report any vehicle problems. f. If a whistle blows and/or if a command is given over the police radio to stop training 1 MOUNTAI POLICE VIEW 2019 CPT Driver Training July/August Group will be broken down into teams: 1. "Large Area Response" Driving Exercise and Evaluation 2. Low Speed Exercises and Vehicle Safety Review Debrief of a recent critical incident and pursuit (2 hours/non POST) 1. Overview of the incident. 2. Listen and watch radio traffic and AXON video. 3. Discuss testimonials from involved officers. 4. Discuss lessons learned. Five Step Corner Review and Driving Exercise: (1 hour) 1. Following a group review of the five-step corner and Vehicle Dynamics, the student will drive the rectangle course to demonstrate their cornering ability. The student will show the safe rate of speed entering the corner, the use of the available roadway with the least amount of steering, and acceleration control out of the corner. Additional review will consist of: . Weight Transfer · Understeer • Oversteer . Roadway position • • Roadway position in the real world (Constant, Decreasing, and Increasing Radius) Braking, Approach, Apex, Exit, and Acceleration • High Visual Horizon "Large Area High Speed Driving” Driving Exercise and Evaluation: (4 hours) 1. Students will be dispatched to an event requiring a code three response during which the student we engage in a response driving situation. During the response the student will be required to adhere to the ever changing road conditions (including but not limited to road conditions, vehicle traffic, weather, and the community). This section is broken down into two sessions throughout the day. • Overview of response . One student and instructor in all units • • Police radio will be properly utilized Emergency lights and siren will be used . Follow Pursuit/Code 3 policy 2 MOUNTAI POLICE VIEW 2019 CPT Driver Training July/August Objectives: To evaluate the student's existing driving ability. • To emphasize the limitations of the student. • To stress the importance of skillful driving so that the student becomes more aware of the necessity for safety. • Heavy emphasis on radio communications. 2. Closing of this session will cover the following: • • Vehicle dynamics Fundamental awareness of vehicle operations judgment and physiological effects. 3. Collision Avoidance Exercise - (POST Course set to new dimensions) • This exercise is used to demonstrate and improve the student's driving ability by focusing on throttle, braking and steering techniques on a limited area course. 4. Closing of this session will cover the following: • Vehicle dynamics Fundamental awareness of vehicle operations judgment and physiological effects. Low Speed Exercises and Vehicle Safety Review (1 hours) Several exercises will be set to review and incorporate several backing techniques. The exercises will be as follows: Steering Course Exercise (Forward and Backwards) "T" Driveway Exercise (POST driveway) Parallel Parking Exercise (POST Required) Forward/reverse Maneuvering (POST Off-Set Lane) • . . Chicane Exercise 3 MOUNTAI POLICE VIEW 2019 CPT Driver Training July/August The low speed skills test course will be set up which students must pass and be signed off on. This course incorporates several of the exercises above. This section of the course is a review of the PSP exercises that is incorporated into every driver training session. 1) BASIC DRIVING PRINIPLES a) Weight Transfer i) Weight distributed between front and rear wheels ii) Engine location has greater part of weight distribution iii) Types of weight transfer (1) Lateral: Side to side (2) Longitudinal: Front to rear / Rear to front iv) Lateral transfer created when vehicle turned left/right v) Longitudinal transfer created when: (1) Braking Rear / Front (2) Accelerating Rear / Front (3) Decelerating Rear / Front vi) Can't be eliminated in moving vehicle vii) Minimized by good driving techniques and smooth operations b) Steering Control i) Seating position (1) Driver comfort (2) Efficient vehicle control (3) Wrist break over top of
