Policy Text
I. A reward is a sum of money offered for the detection or capture of a criminal
and/or to help a solve crime.
A. The recommendation to offer a reward will be made by the Chief of
Police, Deputy Chief, Assistant Chief or a supervisor in the Investigations
Division holding the rank of Lieutenant or above.
B. All recommendations will be forwarded to the Chief of Police for final
approval and submission to One Miami Beach for payment.
C. The Investigations Division Captain or designee is responsible for
maintaining an up-to-date record of Reward Fund offers and payments.
D. The Investigations Division Captain will meet with the One Miami Beach
Board, at a minimum two times per year, for the purpose of briefing the
One Miami Beach Board on the status of the Reward Fund program and
any pending recommendations for reward payments.
E. Reward offers ranging from $100.00 to $10,000.00 may be recommended
by the Department and authorized Chief of Police. Reward offers
greater than $5,000.00 must be approved by the Chief of Police or Deputy
Chief prior to being offered. Reward offers greater than $10,000.00 must
be approved by One Miami Beach prior to being offered.
F. A reward will be paid only after the arrest and conviction of the person or
persons responsible for the crime.
G. The Department may recommend, and One Miami Beach may approve,
partial payment of a previously offered reward total or may divide the
reward offer between multiple persons when to do so is reasonable in light
of the relative degree of cooperation and contribution of the persons
involved.
H. The identity of the reward recipient will be kept confidential to the degree
allowed by law or unless the recipient agrees, in writing, to public
disclosure of their name.
