SOP #151 - PHYSICAL FITNESS PROGRAM

Miami Beach Police Department

Policy Text
I. Program Guidelines A. The Department encourages all employees to maintain physical fitness and general health for their own personal well-being and to best perform identified job tasks and enhance job performance. Program participation is encouraged but not mandatory. The use of the locker rooms and gym is a privilege and not an employee right. B. Only authorized employees are permitted to use the gym and/or its equipment. Authorized employees include all employees of the Department and any other persons authorized by the Chief of Police, the Deputy Chief of Police or the designated gym supervisor. C. Requests to exercise during the shift must be made at the start of the employee’s shift and permission must be granted by the employee’s supervisor prior to exercising. D. Supervisors will assess their staffing needs based on calls for service holding and other work demands prior to making a decision approving or denying any exercise request. E. The exercise program will be treated as the lowest priority call for service. F. A police supervisor may revoke permission for the workout at any time due to Department needs. G. The on-duty exercise program during any roll call is prohibited. H. The Chief of Police may withhold permission for any employee to participate in the Physical Fitness Program based on the employee’s work performance, history of injuries or other reasonable indicators that participation is not in the best interests of the Department. Participants found abusing the process or equipment will lose access to this privilege.
