DEFINITIONS: K-9 HANDLER(S) - Police officer trained to handle a Department Police Work Dog (K-9). K-9 TEAM(S) - Trained canine handler and the assigned Department Police Work Dog (K-9 Team). HIGH-RISK K-9 DEPLOYMENT - Use of a K-9 Team for criminal apprehension purposes during instances where situational information and factors lead officers to believe the offender at large is armed with a firearm or other deadly weapon. RETIRED POLICE DOG - Means a dog that was previously in the service of the Department for the principal purpose of aiding in the detection of criminal activity, enforcement of laws, or apprehension of offenders and that received certification in obedience and apprehension work from a certifying organization.
