DEFINITIONS:
ABSENCE - Not reporting for work or not remaining at work as scheduled.
EMERGENCY LEAVE - An emergency is a sudden, unexpected and/or unforeseen
event or occurrence requiring the employee to take immediate action.
EXCUSED ABSENCE - Documented medical reason, such as serious illness, non-work-
related injury, or surgery; absences approved under the Family Medical Leave Act
(FMLA).
EXCESSIVE ABSENTEEISM - Ten incidents or ten days in a 12-month period.

FAMILY MEDICAL LEAVE ACT (FMLA) - The FMLA entitles eligible employees of
covered employers to take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical
reasons with continuation of group health insurance coverage under the same terms and
conditions as if the employee had not taken leave. In general, eligible employees must
work have worked 1,250 hours during the 12 months prior to the start of leave and have
worked for the employer for 12 months.
HARDSHIP - A situation which can and/or does affect the employee’s well-being or
performance and is generally related to a major, unexpected disruption in the employee’s
life. Hardship can be either medical or non-medical.
INCIDENTS - An unauthorized absence on one or more consecutive days due to a non-
work-related illness.
PATTERNED ABSENTEEISM - Are unscheduled absences for which a pattern(s)
exists. Such pattern(s) include but are not limited to absences that are adjacent to
weekends or holidays; scheduled work on normal days off; absences that occur at
the same time each year or day before or after a scheduled holiday, vacation or
personal day; on a specific day of the week; weekend; or a specific or unique
workday; on desirable days off when the employee might otherwise be scheduled
to work; or as sick leave or other paid time off is accrued. Patterned absences are
within the employee’s control for which discipline may be required.
SALARY AUGMENTATION - Pay that is added to the base salary of an employee. Such
augmentation may be considered as premium pay, merit pay, differential pay, or a
temporary increase because of a temporary assignment to a position with a higher salary
base.
TARDY - Six minutes or more late.
PROCEDURE:
