The Department shall issue uniforms and equipment as required for employees to accomplish assigned functions and provide ease of recognition and/or identification fo r Kissimmee Police Department Employees. 208.01 Personal Appearance: On-duty employees shall adhere to a “business appropriate” appearance standard, which are in line with the values traditionally associated with the Kissimmee Police Department. All empl oyees shall be properly groomed and their attire appropriately cleaned and pressed. 208.02 Grooming: All Department members shall wear their hair in a neat professional manner and will not present an extreme appearance. Dyeing or highlighting hair is perm itted, but Department members’ hair color must be consistent with a naturally occurring color range and must be professional in appearance. Dreadlocks, twists and braids shall conform to standards outlined in this policy and shall be kept clean and neat. B eaded braids are prohibited. Hairstyles a. Hairstyles of male officers will be neatly trimmed and kept in a professional manner Male hair shall not be longer than the top of the shirt collar at the back of the neck when standing with the head in a normal posture and shall not extend more the one an d one -half inches (1½”) from the side of the head. Hair must be worn above the ears. Sideburns shall be no more than one inch (1”) wide, shall not extend below the bottom of the earlobes and shall be neatly trimmed. Hairstyles for female officers shall be neatly maintained and kept in a professional manner. Female officers may wear their hair loose, in a bun, or ponytail provided it does not extend past the center of the shoulder blades when standing upright. Hair must not obstruct vision, interfer e with the proper use of safety equipment, or create a hazard in operational scenarios. Hairstyles must not prevent the proper fitting of headgear, including hats or helmets, as required by the department. Hair holding devices ( i.e. rubber bands, clips, barrettes, pins), when used, must be unadorned and plain, and be transparent or similar to the color of the hair. Hair scarves, bows, large and decorative fabric -covered elastic bands or other ornamental items are prohibited. Mustaches, Beards & Goatees Mustaches shall be neatly trimmed, not exceed the natural lip line, and not extend beyond one - quarter inch (¼”) below the corner of the mouth. Mustaches shall not be waxed or twisted. Beards are permitted but SHALL be worn in accordance with the followin g guidelines: a. Be kept neat, clean, and evenly trimmed; b. Be a consistent length throughout and shall not be more than one -quarter inch (¼”) in length at its longest point (measured by a standard hair/beard trimmer guide comb of #2); c. Follow the jawbone line and not extend farther down the neck than the Adam’s apple, nor up onto the cheek under the eye ; d. Connect to the sideburns and mustache; e. Not be trimmed or grown in an eccentric manner or “fade type”; f. Should be grown while on vacation, off -duty or otherwise away from the department; and g. Not interfere with the overall safety of the officer(s) or the mission of the department (i.e. proper fitting of gas mask or other equipment). Goatees are permitted but SHALL be worn in acco rdance with the following guidelines: a. Be kept neat, clean and evenly trimmed; b. Be a consistent length throughout and shall not be more than one -quarter inch (¼”) in length at its longest point (measured by a standard hair/beard trimmer guide comb of #2); c. Should be grown while on vacation, off -duty or otherwise away from the department; and d. Not interfere with the overall safety of the officer(s) or the mission of the department (i.e. proper fitting of gas mask or other equipment). Special Team Commanders shall have the authority in determining if mustaches/beards will be permitted for members under their respective team(s), due to operational requirements of the team(s) (i.e. proper fitting of gas mask or other equipment).
