Policy: Temporary light duty assignments are for officers and other eligible employees in the
Department who, because of injury or illness, are temporarily unable to perform their regular
assignments; but are capable of performing alternative duty assignments. The use of temporar y
light duty can provide employees with an opportunity to remain productive while convalescing. It
also provides a work option for employees who may otherwise risk their health and safety or the
safety of others by remaining on duty when physically or ment ally unfit for their regular
assignment. Therefore, it is the policy of the Kissimmee Police Department that eligible personnel
are given a reasonable opportunity to work in temporary light duty assignments when available
and consistent with this policy. This policy complies with the requirements set forth in Florida
Statute 440 dealing with Employee's Rights and Responsibilities regarding work -related injuries
or accidents.
205.01 Procedure s: Temporary light duty positions are limited in number, task, variety, and
availability. Therefore, nothing in this General Order shall create a contractual term or condition
that an employee is entitled to light duty assignments. All light duty assignments shall be assigned
through the Chief of Police or their designee in coordination with the Human Resources and Risk
Management Department. Decisions on light duty assignments shall be made based on the overall
availability of assignments, the availability of an appropriate assignment given the employees'
knowledge, skills, and abilities, and the physical restrictions.
Assignments may be changed at any time, with the concurrence of the treat ing physician or if
deemed in the best interest of the employee or the Department. This policy shall in no way affect
the privileges of employees under provisions of the Family and Medical L eave Act , Fair Labor
Standards Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, Collective Bargaining Agreement, or other
Federal or State Law. Furthermore, assignment to temporary light duty shall not affect an
employee's pay classification, pay increases, promotions, retirement benefits, or other employee
benefits.

Page 2 of 8 No specific position within the Department shall be established for the use as a temporary light
duty assignment, nor shal l any existing position be designated or utilized exclusively for personnel
on temporary light duty.
Employees who decline a light duty assignment, or are on a no -duty status, shall remain in contact
with the Department. They shall provide an update to t heir supervisor at least once a week.
205.02 On -Duty Injuries: Employees who are injured while on -duty shall:
a. Immediately notify their supervisor;
b. Seek the appropriate medical attention to address the injury;
c. Minor injuries that do not customarily require immediate professional medical attention
shall be self -treated using standard first aid practices;
d. Injuries that require immediate professional medical attention shall be treated at the
medical facility identified by the Human Resources and Risk Management Department
during normal business hours;
e. After hours injuries that require immediate professional medical attention and life -
threatening injur ies shall be treated at the appropriate hospital emergency room; and
f. Respond to the Human Resources and Risk Management Department as soon as possible
after the medical treatment to complete the necessary Workers Compensation paperwork
(Notice of Injury Report and Accident Investigation Report ) if not incapacitated.
205.03 Supervisor Responsibilities: Supervisors who are made aware of an on -duty injury shall:
a. Respond to the scene;
b. Complete the necessary paperwork to include the Employee's Workers Compensation
Report of Injury form and City of Kissimmee forms;
c. Notify the Human Resources and Risk Management Department. During normal business
hours, contact shall be made via telephone or personal visit . After normal business hours,
contact shall be made via e -mail;
d. If the injury requires immediate professional medical attention or is life -threateni ng, the
Safety and Risk Coordinator and/or the Human Resources and Risk Management Director
shall be contacted regardless of the time of day;
e. Forward all related paperwork to the Human Resources and Risk Management Department
within twenty -four (24) hours of the injury, or on the first business day after the injury if
the injury occurred on a weekend or holiday, via the chain of command;

Page 3 of 8 f. Notify the chain of command up to and including the Chief of Police;
g. Confirm the injured employee contacts the Human Resources and Risk Management
Department as soon as possible after the medical treatment. Contact must be made within
twenty -four (24) hours of the injury or the first workday after the injury if it occurred on a
weekend or holiday; and
h. Contact the Human Resources and Risk Management Department if the employee is
incapacitated so arrangements can be made to transport the Workers Compensation
paperwork to the employee.
