KERN COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE Sheriff’s Detentions Canine Program Policies and Procedures TITLE: DETENTIONS CANINE UNIT CANINE DEPLOYMENTS R-100 EFFECTIVE: REVIEWED: REVISED: UPDATED: April 1, 2023 07-11-24 07-11-24 APPROVED BY: Detentions Bureau Chief Deputy Cindy Cisneros REFERENCE: POLICY This purpose and scope of this policy is to establish guidelines for the use of narcotic detection canines to reduce the amount of illegal drugs and other contraband from entering and circulating within our jail facilities. Canine handlers shall operate in accordance with existing Kern County Sheriff’s Office Policies. No canine team will be serviceable unless the handler and canine are current on all training requirements set forth by the Kern County Sheriff’s Office. This includes monthly training hour requirements and annual certifications for detection. Canine teams should generally not be assigned to handle routine matters that will take them out of service for an extended period of time.
