POLICY
The Kern County Sheriff’s Office recognizes that Park Rangers have responsibilities and
limitations imposed by law that do not apply to other employees. It is therefore necessary to list
duties for Park Rangers.
Park Rangers are peace officers, as defined in Penal Code § 830.31(b), whose authority extends
to any place in the state only while engaged in the performance of assigned duties in order to
carry out the primary function of employment relating to his or her assignment, or while
performing other law enforcement duties directed by the Sheriff-Coroner during a local state of
emergency.
Park Rangers shall prioritize enhancing the quality of life within our County Parks by focusing
on proactive solutions and emphasizing education over enforcement whenever appropriate.
