SUBJECT: TRAFFIC CRASH IN VESTIGATOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
I. PURPOSE: The purpose of this s tandard operating p rocedure is to establish guidelines
for the Department of Patrol Services , Traffic Crash Investigator positions.
II. SCOPE: This procedure shall apply to the Department of Patrol Services, Traffic Crash
Investigator positions .
III. DISCUSSION: A Traffic Crash Investigator is a district patrol deputy who has the
additional responsibility of responding to and conducting traffic crash investigations as
directed.
IV. PROCEDURE:
A. To perform the duties and responsibilities of a Deputy Sheriff as outlined in
Sheriff’s Office policies and procedures.
B. Specialized Duties:
1. Respond to and investigate non -fatal traffic crashes.
2. Respond to and investigate t raffic crashes involving Sheriff's Office
vehicles or those o f another agen cy as outlined in GEN SOP 510.04
entitled ”Traffic Crash Investigations”.
3. Provide technical expertise as requested to Sheriff's Office personnel
involved in the investigation of non-fatal traffic crashes, or other crimes
involving vehicles.
4. Conduct selective traffic enforce ment and surveys as directed by a
supervisor.
V. SELECTION:
A. Traffic Crash Investigators shall be selected by the District Commander
according to the needs of the district .
B. The minimum requirements for selection are:
1. Two years of experience in law enforcement. If the two years experience
is with an agency other than the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, that
particular candidate must complete the mandatory Sheriff's Office
probationary period prior to submitting a request for consideration to be a
Traffic Crash Investigator.
2. Following the two week posting period, interviews will be conducted as
deemed necessary by the District Comman der or their designee. A
recommendation to the District Commander will be m ade in accordance
with applicable directives.
