SUBJECT: PRESUMPTIVE DRUG FIELD REAGENT TEST KITS
I. PURPOSE : The purpose of this standard operating procedure is to provide law enforcement
and detention deputies with an established guideline when utilizing the QuickCheck
Presumptive Drug Field Reagent Test Kits.
II. SCOPE : This procedure shall apply to a ll law enforcement and detention deputies certified in
testing n arcotics and controlled substances.
III. DISCUSSION : This procedure establishes guidelines for the proper storage and utilization of
presumptive drug Field R eagent Test Kits.
IV. DEFINITION S:
A. Field Reagent Test Kit - A self -contained presumptive testing kit utili zed for field testing
narcotics and controlled substances.
B. Field Reagent Test Template - A form utilized for documenting the results of a
presumptive drug test. This form sh all be completed at the conclusion of testing the
presumed illic it substances .
* C. Thermo Scientific Analyzer “TruNarc” - The Thermo Scientific Analyzer is a 785 -nm
Raman spectrometer used for the rapid presumptive identification of narcotics and
suspecte d illicit substances.
V. PROCEDURE :
A. Storage and Shelf Life .
1. Field Reagent Test Kits have an i ndefinite s helf life if maintained at room
temperature when ever possible.
2. Personnel shall not ke ep excessive amounts of test kits in their vehicle s.
3. Do not expose test kits to constant sunlight or extreme h eat.
4. Extreme cold may slow the Field Reagent Test Kit ’s reaction time .
5. Extreme heat may speed Field Reagent Test Kit results .
6. Methamphetamine and Ecstasy test s are particularly sensit ive to light and heat .
B. Safety points that all personnel shall follow when utilizing a Field Reagent Test .
1. Always wear gloves .
2. Keep the tube away from your face .
3. Be mindful of glass sh ards while breaking the ampoule s.
4. Follow the dispo sal guidelines to ensure safety of a used tester .
C. Interpretati on/Test Procedures .
1. Obtain a sample of th e presumed illicit substance for testing.

2. Based on training and visual observations, personnel should determine which
test kit to use.
3. Follow the manufacture r’s instructions for testing that are printed on the back of
the box containing the tester.
a. Methamphetamine/Ecstasy - Items will be tested according to the
manufacturer’s instructions. These directions shall be followed at all
times an d are printed on the back of the box.
(1) Remove cap and place a small amount of the suspected drug into
the tube.
(2) Carefully replace the cap. Tap to drive sample to bottom.
(3) For s afety, center the QuickCheck Sleeve over the bottom
ampoule and bre ak (do not crush) by applying pressure bet ween
the thumb and forefinger. Agitate for five seconds. No color
appears.
(4) Break the cap ampoule . Agitate and immediately notice a dark
blue color.
(5) The sequence of color changes in step (4) above indicat es a
positive result. Any deviation may indicate a negative.
b. Cocaine - Items will be tested according to the manufacturer’s
instructions. These directions shall be followed at all times and are
printed on the back of the box.
(1) Remove cap and plac e a small amount of the suspected drug into
the tube.
(2) Carefully replace the cap. Tap to drive sample to bottom.
(3) For s afety, center the QuickCheck Sleeve over the bottom
ampoule and break (do not crush) by applying pressure bet ween
the thum b and fo refinger. Agitate and immediately look for a blue
color.
(4) Break the cap ampoule . Agitate and immediately notice blue
flakes in pink background.
(5) The seq uence of color changes in step ( 4) above indicates a
positive result. If no blue appears after breaking the first ampoule ,
test indicates a negative result.
* c. Marijuana NARK II HEMP/CBD Screening test - Items will be tested
according to the manufacturer’s instructions. These directions shall be
followed at all times and are printed on t he back of the box.
(1) Remove clip and place a small amount of the sus pected drug into
the pouch .
(2) Carefully replace the clip. Tap to drive sample to the bottom.
(3) With the printed side of the pouch facing you, gently squeeze the
center of the left ampoule with the tips of the thumb and forefinger
to break the ampoule. Agitate for 30 seconds. There should be
no color change. Gently squeeze the center of the right ampo ule
with the tips of the thumb and forefinger to break the ampoule.
(4) Analyze resultin g colors. A pink to purple color should appear in a
few seconds if the substance
