PURPOSE : The purpose of thi s standard operating procedure is to define guidelines for the Field Training Program. II. SCOPE : This procedure shall apply to all sworn Sheriff's Office personnel. * III. DISCUSSION : The Field Training Program has been developed and implemented as a struct ured and closely supervised program provided to probationary deputies (PDs) to facilitate the application of skills and knowledge obtained in the academy/classroom to act ual performance in on -the-job situations. Providing PDs with field training exp erienc es, as a supplement to classroom instruction, is a relevant function of the training program. Field training shall be organized, standardized, equitably evaluate d, and closely supervised. IV. DEFINITIONS : * A. Cadet - A deputy sheriff trainee wh o is enrolled in Academy Orientation Training and Basic Academy Training . * B. Field Training Committee - A committee compris ed of the Training Division Lieutenant, the district Field Training Coordinator s, selected F ield Training Deputies (F TDs), and selec t pers onnel . The Field Training Committee is assigned to review, monitor, and revise the Field Training Manual and the Field Training Program ; train FTDs ; and serve as a resource to FTDs and the Sheriff’s Office. The Field Training Committee shall work in coop eration with the Training Division. * C. Field Training Coordinator - A lieutenant who is selected by the respective District Commander to oversee the Field Training Program for that district. The coordinator is responsible for coordinati ng the sel ection process of Field Training personnel ; monitoring the performance of said personnel and the progress of probationary deputies ; reviewing require d program documentation for accuracy and completion ; and participating on the Field Training Committee. * D. Field Training Deputy (FTD ) - A deputy who has been carefully selected and trained to deliver the field training program to PDs and who must be off probation for two years. E. Field Training Manual - A comprehensive outline of the field training prog ram us ed by the FTD in the PD training process. The manual establishes polic ies, procedures, and guidelines for PD training and evaluation . The manual shall be prepared, reviewed, and updated by the respective Field Training Committee. * F. FTD In -Servi ce - A mandatory FTD retraining course conducted annually for all FTDs which covers topics pertinent to the Field Training Program. * G. FTD Training Course - A comprehensive training course that provides deputies with an understanding of the philosophy a nd des ign of the Field Training Program, instruction procedures, evalua tion of PD performance, and documentation. This initial training is approximately 40 hours in length and is provided by the Sheriff’s Office. GEN 222.00 12/09/ 22 Page 2 of 2 * H. LEAPS - The LexisNexis Law Enforceme nt Aut omated Personnel System which tracks, navigates, maintains, and archives the Sheriff’s Office Field Training Program. * I. Probationary Deputy (PD) - A probationary deputy sheriff who has not completed the probationary period . V. PROCEDURE : * A. Personn el who wish to be considered for assignment as a FTD shall submit a request on the Field Training Deputy Application Form and a current resume , along with a cover inter-office memorandum, via chain of command to their respective District FTD Coordina tor. B. In cooperation with the respective Field Train ing Committee, the training of FTDs shall be the responsibility of the Training Division . The Training Division shall also act as liaison with the Regional Law Enforcement Training Academy. C. FTDs shall b e assigned with regard to training needs and in conjunction with the approved FTD deployment plan. D. FTDs shall be responsible for training PDs. They shall also be responsible for completing and submit ting PD evaluations in a manner prescribed in the re spective department’s Field Training Manual. * E. PDs are required to “cross -train” in Accident Investigations (AI) and Driving Under the Influence (DUI) operations . F. PDs, who fail to complete the pr escribed training program for their respective depart ment , shall be subject to termination. VI. FTD PAY: A. FTDs are eligible to receive additional pay for training law enforcement or detention PDs or reserve deputies. To be compensated under this category, the FTD must meet the requirements outline d in GEN SOP 209.00 . B. Processing the FTD pay request : The request is initiated either through the Change Job or Compensation Change feature within Workday. The same process is necessary to remove the allowance once an employee is no longer eligible. * C. Approved Field Training supervisors are eligible to rece ive additional pay . To be compensated under this category, the supervisor must meet the requirements outlined in GEN SOP 20 9.00. Chad
