PURPOSE : The purpose of this standard operating procedure is to define the duties and responsibilities of the Sheriff. II. SCOPE : This shall apply to the Sheriff of Hillsborough County, Florida. III. DISCUSSION : The Sheriff is a Constitutional Officer of the State of Florida as defined by Article VIII, Section 1 (d) of the Florida Constitution, elected by the people to serve a four- year term of office. The Sheriff is charged, by Florida Law, to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of his office, as set forth i n the Florida Constitution and Florida Statutes. IV. PROCEDURE : Pursuant to Florida State Statute 30.15, the Sheriff of Hillsborough County, Florida, in person or by deputy, shall: A. Execute all processes of the Supreme Court, circuit courts, county co urts, and boards of county commissioners of this state, to be executed in Hillsborough County. B. Execute such other writs, processes, warrants, and other papers directed to him, as may come to his hands to be executed in Hillsborough County. C. Attend a ll terms of the circuit court and county court held in Hillsborough County. D. Attend all meetings at the will of the Board of County Commissioners and execute all orders of the Board of County Commis sioners; for which services the Sheriff shall receive s uch compensation out of the county treasury, as said board may deem proper. E. Be conservator of the peace in the county. F. Suppress tumults, riots, and unlawful assemblies in the county with force and a strong hand, when necessary. G. Apprehend, witho ut a warrant , any person disturbing the peace, and carry that person before the proper judicial officer, that further proceedings may be had against him or her according to law. H. Have authority to raise the power of the county and command any person's assistance, when necessary, in the execution of the duties of the Office of Sheriff; and, whoever, not being physically incompetent, refuses or neglects to render such assistance, shall be punished by imprisonment in jail as prescribed by law. I. Be the ex officio, timber agent for Hillsborough County . J. Be responsible for the operation of the county detention system and for those persons remanded to his custody by order of court or operation of law. K.
