Procedure for items being held by an investigator or a specialized unit and not physically being turned into
Property & Evidence.
The fo llowing procedure is for sworn officers, community service officers, and cadets who will be booking
items that will be directly handed to an investigator or a specialized unit for investigative purposes and not
physically being dropped off in Property & Evidence:
1. Book the property into Axon or Spillman as evidence, safekeeping, or found.
2. When booking into Axon, the DROPOFF location should be the unit in which the item will be held.
I.E. Drop Off CAP Investigations
Drop Off BEATS Investigations
Drop Off Neighborhood Traffic Unit
Drop Off Special Investigations Unit
Drop Off Gangs Suppression Unit
Drop Off Community Impact Unit
Drop Off Youth Services Unit
When booking into Spillman , the LOCATION tab should reflect the unit in which the item is being held
in (I.E. CAP, BEATS, NTU, SIU, GSU, CIU, YSU) and the REASON tab should reflect the name of the
individual that is taking custody of the item.
3. If property has been submitted with a temporary location within P&E but will be given to a specialized
unit instead, an e -mail must be sent to Property and Evidence personnel with the case number, item
number, name of the unit, and name of the individual taking custody of the item.
These steps are necessary for Property and Evidence personnel to maintain an accurate record of chain of
custody.
