1025.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE
Cadets work under direct supervision, perform a variety of routine and progressively more
advanced tasks in an apprenticeship program in preparation for a career in law enforcement.
1025.2 EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Cadets must carry at least twelve (12) units in a field applicable to law enforcement or those
that apply or are required to obtain an AA, BA or BS college degree. School schedules shall be
submitted to the Cadet Coordinator as soon as they are obtained. Any changes in the school
schedule or attendance status must be submitted to the Cadet Coordinator as soon as possible.
A minimum 2.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) must be maintained. Official transcripts shall be
submitted to the Cadet Coordinator within one (1) week of the official grades being posted. Failure
to maintain the 2.0 GPA may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination. Failure
to maintain a 2.0 GPA will result in academic probation for one semester. If the following semester
remains below a 2.0 GPA, the employee is subject to termination.
1025.3 PROGRAM COORDINATOR
The Professional Standards Division Recruitment Officer will serve as the Program Coordinator.
This supervisor will be responsible for tracking the educational and job performance of cadets as
well as making their individual assignments throughout the Department. He/she will also monitor
the training provided for all cadets and review all decisions affecting job assignments, status for
compensation, school attendance and performance evaluations.
1025.4 ORIENTATION AND TRAINING
Newly hired cadets will receive an orientation of the organization and facilities before reporting to
their first assignment. On-the-job training will be conducted in compliance with the Police Cadet
Manual. Training sessions will be scheduled as needed to train cadets for as many assignments
as possible. In addition to job-specific training, information will be offered to prepare cadets to
compete successfully in the police officer selection process. All training will focus on improving
job performance, as well as preparation to become police officers. These meetings will also offer
an opportunity to receive continuous feedback regarding progress of the program.
1025.5 CADET UNIFORMS
Each cadet will be provided a minimum of two uniforms meeting the specifications as described
in the Police Cadet Manual. Additional uniforms will be provided, as needed or depending on the
assignment.

DepartmentPolice Cadets - 21025.6 ROTATION OF ASSIGNMENTS
Rotating job assignments should occur on a yearly basis to enhance the career development for
each cadet. Department needs and concerns will take precedence over individual considerations
with the final decision resting with the Professional Standards Division Lieutenant.
In general, senior cadets will be assigned to positions requiring more technical skill or
responsibility, as well as serving to train cadets for new assignments or those newly hired.
1025.7 RIDE-ALONG PROCEDURES
All cadets are authorized to participate in the Ride-Along Program on their own time and as
approved by their immediate supervisor and the Program Coordinator. Cadets shall wear their
uniform while participating on a ride-along.
1025.8 PERFORMANCE EVALUATIONS
Performance evaluations for all cadets shall be completed on a yearly basis to assess their current
job performance and their potential as police officers.
