PURPOSE: This Order establishes procedural guidelines for the protection of employees of the Gainesville Police Department who are at risk of contamination by blood-borne or airborne pathogens. II. POLICY: The Department shall adopt a set of policies and practices, issue protective equipment, and train members to protect themselves from, and to minimize their risk of exposure to, infectious disease. Ill. DEFINITIONS: A. Airborne Pathogens: Pathogenic microorganisms that are present in and can cause disease in humans. 1. Transmission: The virus may be transmitted through the breath or spittle (breathing, coughing, spitting) of an infected person to another who is sharing an enclosed space or is in close physical proximity to the infected person. 2. Examples: Include, but not limited to, tuberculosis, small pox. B. Biohazardous Material: A substance (chemical, virus, bacteria, etc.) that is a threat to life. C. Blood borne Pathogens: Pathogenic microorganisms that are present in human blood and other potentially infectious materials, and can cause disease in humans. 1. Transmission: The virus is transmitted primarily through sexual contact or through contact with blood, identified body fluids, and other potentially infectious materials. 2.
