I. PURPOSE: This Order ensures that Department members maintain good health and fitness
as it relates to their job tasks. [CALEA 22.2.2]
II. POLICY: Because a member’s health and well-being is of prime importance to the member,
the member’s family, co-workers, City government, and the citizens of the community, the
Gainesville Police Department shall provide Department members with physical examinations
pursuant to the following provisions.
III. PROCEDURE:
A. Annual Health Assessments:
1. Frequency: Annual health assessments will be provided to full-time sworn
Department members without cost to the employee.
2. Content: Department members shall schedule the appointments with the
Risk Management City’s Health Services to occur during the member’s birth
month. Risk Management will not turn down an employee scheduling their
appointment after the member’s birth month. The appointment may include
the following tests.
i. Blood chemistry profile
ii. Audio and visual screening,
iii. Heart and respiratory rates,
iv. Lung capacity analysis,
v. Blood pressure check,
vi. Flexibility analysis,
vii. Stationary bicycle stress test,

B. Physical Examinations: The City of Gainesville and the Gainesville Police
Department shall provide their members with physical examinations in accordance with
their respective bargaining agreements. [CALEA 22.2.1]
The nature and extent of the examination is dependent on the member’s age and
medical history, as determined by City policy and the City’s Occupational Health Nurse.
C. Physical Fitness:
1. Maintaining Fitness: Department members are required to maintain a level of
physical fitness that will enable them to perform their essential duties effectively.
If a question arises as to a member’s ability to perform his/her essential job
functions due to an apparent low level of health and/or fitness, the member may
be required to submit to a physician’s examination and, if possible, to bring
his/her health or fitness level to an acceptable standard.
2. Employee Options for Physical Fitness Facilities and Equipment: There
are several options for employees to choose regarding fitness activities:
i. The Department provides and maintains a gymnasium on premise for
use by employees.
ii. Department members may be permitted to work out during their
authorized meal breaks, depending on the regulations governing meal
breaks in their particular assignments.
iii. Department members with take-home vehicles are permitted to use
their vehicles for off-duty transportation to fitness facilities in Alachua
County.
iv. Department members have the option of participating in the purchase
of home fitness equipment through the City’s Spring Into Fitness program.
v. Fitness and Wellness Program: Eligibly members of the Gainesville
Police Department may participate in the “ProClub” program. ProClub is a
health incentive program guiding individuals towards a healthier lifestyle
and lower healthcare costs. [CALEA 22.2.3]For further information
members should contact the City of Gainesville Risk Management
Department. Participation is voluntary and is available to all employees,
retirees, and spouses enrolled on the health plan and who are off
probation. [CALEA 22.2.3.a]The “ProClub” program includes the
following:
a. Includes a trained program coordinator; [CALEA 22.2.3.b]
b. Individual health screening and fitness assessment; [CALEA
22.2.3.c]
c. Individual education and goal setting; [CALEA 22.2.3.d]
