TO: EL DORADO COUNTY PROBATION DEPARTMENT MEMORANDUM All Deputy Probation Officers-Field FROM: Brian Richart, Chief Probation Officer DATE: December 1, 2014 RE: Standing Order: Modified Duty Wear-Field Probation Officer (First Amended) This Standing Order grants authorization for a Modified Duty Wear option for Probation Officers and will remain in effect until Procedure F8 (Revised 11/12), "Arming: Use of Firearms" and Procedure F11, "Safety Equipment for Non-Armed Probation Officers" is updated or this order is otherwise modified or rescinded. The purpose of this order is to provide officers with maximum flexibility, while maintaining officer safety as the number one priority. Armed Probation Officers, stationed in office locations and school sites, attending court, attending department authorized training, and/or attending meetings outside the office have the option of the Modified Duty Wear. Probation Officers utilizing this option shall, at a minimum, have a department issued identification badge/card, holster, loaded firearm, OC Spray, one set of handcuffs, and a belt badge displayed in close proximity to the firearm. Use of protective ballistic vests is encouraged but not mandatory under these conditions however, a ballistic vest will be accessible to the officer by being located and secured in a reasonable proximity to the officer, such as a locked work space or vehicle, out of view. Unarmed Probation Officers also have the option of Modified Duty Wear. Unarmed Probation Officers utilizing this option shall have all the same safety equipment mentioned above with the exception of the firearm. Unarmed Probation Officers shall display a belt badge in close proximity to the OC Spray. Armed and Unarmed Probation Officers conducting home/field visits, participating in multiagency operations or other enforcement activities, completing planned arrests in office locations(including schools), or engaging in other planned enforcement related activities shall wear all safety equipment as currently defined in Procedure F8 (11/12) and F11 (11/12). Currently the department is pursuing alternative equipment to better facilitate the Modified Duty Wear option. Until this new equipment is identified and distributed, existing equipment must be utilized as designed.
