All safety equipment shall be kept in the probation officer’s equipment locker at all times when not in use. The only exception is the charging of radio batteries , which may be located in the probation officer’s d esk area when charging. The Chief Probation Officer may authorize concealment of the firearm and related equipment for undercover operations during a specific event and/or for a specific purpose. A probation officer shall not carry the firearm and relate d equipment when boarding an aircraft unless the Chief Probation Officer gives specific written approval. If such permission is given, the probation officer shall contact the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and local airport security departme nt, and comply with all regulations as set forth by the TSA and the local jurisdiction. ARMED PROBATION OFFICERS Armed probation officers shall be armed while conducting supervision/enforcement activities. Probation officers attending meetings away from the office may be armed, but are not required to be armed, during non -enforcement related activities, i.e. SARB or school meetings. Probation officers conducting placement visits or assigned to a school campus may be, but are not required to be, armed. Armed probation officers shall use and wear department issued safety equipment when armed as follows: gun, holster, two extra magazines, magazine case, Conducted Electrical Weapon and holster (when applicable), body armor, OC spray, flashlight and radio. A rmed officers shall use and wear department approved safety equipment when armed as follows: duty belt, handcuffs, Procedure Number: F11 2 handcuff case, OC case and radio case. Armed officers may also use and wear other department approved equipment such as belt keepers, liner belt, double handcuff case, an extra pair of handcuffs, flashlight case, cell phone, key ring holder, search gloves, kubotan (key system/search tool), and any other approved equipment. Armed probation officers stationed in office locations and school site s or attending department authorized training and/or attending meetings outside the office have the option of the Modified Duty Wear. Probation officers utilizing this option shall, at a minimum, have a department issued wallet badge and identification ca rd, holster, loaded firearm, OC spray, OC case, one set of handcuffs, and a belt badge displayed in close proximity to the firearm. Use of body armor is encouraged but not mandatory under these conditions; however, body armor will be accessible to the off icer by being located and secured in a reasonable proximity to the officer, such as a locked work space or vehicle, out of view. UNARMED PROBATION OFFICERS Probation officers who are not armed are issued the same safety equipment as an armed probation off icer, minus the firearm, holster, magazines and ammunition . An unarmed probation officer shall wear the issued/approved safety equipment at all times while conducting supervision/enforcement activities . However, probation officers attending meetings away from the office may wear all their safety equipment, but are not required to wear all of their safety equipment, during non -enforcement related activities, i.e. SARB or school meetings. Probation officers conducting placement visits or assigned to a scho ol campus may, but are not required to, wear all of their safety equipment. Any unarmed probation officer shall have in his/her possession, whenever wearing safety equipment, his/her department issued belt badge and wallet badge/ identification card. The belt badge shall be displayed on the front of the duty belt or vest of the officer . Unarmed probation officers shall use and wear department issued safety equipment as follows: OC spray (if authorized) , body armor, flashlight and radio. Unarmed probation officers shall use and wear department approved safety equipment as follows: duty belt, handcuffs, handcuff case, OC case and radio case. Unarmed probation officers may also use and wear other department approved equipment such as belt keepers, liner be lt, double handcuff case, an extra pair of handcuffs, flashlight case, cell phone, key ring holder, search gloves, kubotan (key system/search tool), and any other approved equipment. If a probation officer purchases department approved equipment, the offic er may use this equipment instead of that issued by the department as long as it is the same as the department issued equipment.
