EDGEWOOD POLICE DEPARTMENT REGULATION
REGULATION 1000 – JUDICIAL AND INVESTIGATIVE ACTIONS,
APPEARANCES AND TESTIFYING

1000 -1, COURT APPEARANCES
Employees shall, when attending court or quasi -judicial hearings, wear either the official uniform or clothing conforming to
standards imposed on officers working plainclothes. Employee s shall present a neat and clean appearance , avoiding any
mannerism that might imply disrespect to the court, such as gum chewing and smoking. Employees shall report to court
or quasi -judicial hearings at the time specified by sub poena or other proper auth ority.
1000 -2, TESTIF YING FOR THE DEFENDANT
Employees who volunteer or are subpoenaed to testify for the defense, or against the City or other government entity in
any trial or hearing, civil or criminal, shall immediately notify their chain of command in writing. The memo sh ould include
the names of the parties involved in the case.
1000 -3, DEPARTMENTAL INVESTIGATIONS: TESTIFYING
Employees are required to answer questions or render material and r elevant statements in Departmental personnel
investigations when so directed b y competent authority.
1000 -4, TRUTHFULNESS
Employees are required to be truthful at all times whether under oath or not.
1000 -5, CIVIL CASES
Employees shall request and rec eive authorization from th e Chief of Police prior to serving civil process or assisting in civil
cases concerning or related to Departmental business, except in cases wherein the employee is initiating the suit or has
been subpoenaed to testify. In these two cases the employees sha ll notify the Chief of Police.
1000 -6, ACCEPTANCE OF SUBPOENA
Employees will accept and obey all subpoenas legally served to their person or served pursuant to current Departmental
directions.
1000 -7, COURT ATTENDANCE WHILE ON DUTY
Employees who are in an on-duty status during the time of a required c ourt appearance or deposition for Department
business shall not utilize compensatory or vacation time in order to revert to an off-duty status for the purpose of collectin g
witness/mileage or deposition f ees.

1000 -8, ACCEPTING COMPENSATION FROM INSURAN CE COMPANIES
When approached by representatives from insurance companies whose clients are involved in auto accidents (or other
incidents) to go to the scene and walk thr ough the facts with their experts , employees will:
a. Not discuss or assist in any cas e pending criminal action except when subpoenaed to do so;
b. Do so only in civil cases with the authorization of a supervisor based on whether time/activity allows it, and;
c. Not accept any compensation for such assistance.
