EDGEWOOD POLICE DEPARTMENT REGULATION
REGULATION 400 – UNIFORM, EQUIPMENT, AND APPEARANCE

400-1, UNIFORM, EQUIPMENT, AND APPEARANCE
Employees shall be neat -appearing and well -groomed while in uniform. Civilian clothing will not be worn with any
distinguishable part of the uniform except as authorized by the Chief of Police.
Bargaining Unit employee s will be issued equipment per the provisions of the current contract between the City of
Edgewood and the Union ( PBA). Employees shall maintain one pair of black low -cut dress shoes. These shoes shall
comply to specifications and guidelines established by the Department.
The Chief of Police will designate, at his/her discretion, certain assignments for which plainclothes will be the authorized
mode of dress. Persons in other assignments will be required to wear the Department uniform unless given the option to
do otherwise by the Chief of Police or the employee's supervisor .
400-2, GENERAL APPEARANCE
At all times while on duty, unless expressly authorized by competent authority, all employees of the Departmen t shall be
well-groomed and clean in their person.
While on duty, employees are prohibited from wearing dental jewelry or facial jewelry (except one earring per ear worn
by females).
Employees are permitted to have tattoos, scarification, brands or oth er body ornamentation to the extent outlined in this
Regulation. Employees who have direct contact with the public are prohibited from displaying or acquiring any new
tattoo(s), scarification(s), brand(s) or other body ornamentation that would be visible a bove the collar bone, or below the
wrist, except cosmetic tattoos (tattoo makeup on the eyes, lips, or eyebrows with a natural appearance).
The display of any tattoo, scarification, brand , or other body ornamentation considered offensive, regardless of its
location, while on duty or in any Department facility is not permitted and shall be covered at all times.
Examples of offensive tattoos, scarifications, brands , or other body ornamentation prohibited by this order include but are
not limited to:
a. Depictions of intolerance or discrimination against any race, religion, gender, or national origin
b. Sexually explicit or vulgar art, words, phrases, or profane language
c. Symbols likely to incite a strong reaction in the workplace (for example, swastikas or s imilar symbols)
d. Initials, acronyms, or numbers that represent criminal or historically oppressive organizations (for example , any
street gang names, numbers, and/or symbols)
e. A split or forked tongue
f. Foreign objects inserted under the skin to create a desig n or pattern
g. Enlarged or stretched out holes in the ears
All employees shall wear their hair in a neat, clean, professional manner and will not present an extreme appearance.
Hair which is colored must mimic a natural human hair color and must not distrac t from the Department’s professional
image. The hair length of female employees is at their own discretion; however, sworn female members should be aware
of the potential danger of a person grabbing long hair.

Male employees shall conform to additional ha ir standards:
Employees' hair will not be permitted to attain such length as to extend beyond the upper one -half of the ear nor overlap
the shirt collar by more than one -quarter inch when the employee is standing. Hair may not be teased or brushed so as
to stand more than one and one -half inch from the head.
Mustaches are permitted and, when worn, will be kept neatly trimmed. Extremely curly or bushy styles will not be worn.
A mustache will not extend more than one -half inch beyond the corners of the mout h.
Sideburns will be tapered to the contour of the head and neatly trimmed. Sideburns cannot extend below the bottom of
the earlobes and must be squared at the bottom.
Beards and Goatees are permitted but SHALL be worn in accordance with the following g uidelines:
1. Kept neat, clean, naturally colored, evenly trimmed , neatly trimmed, symmetrical, and well-maintained
at all times. Facial Hair shall not be groomed, shaped, or styled in a manner that is deemed by
supervision to be extreme. The Chief of Police or designee shall have the final authority in determining
the professional appearance of facial hair.
2. Facial hair shall not be more than one -quarter inch (1/4”) in length at its longest point (measured by a
standard hair/beard trimmer guide comb of #2); and
3. Not extend farther down the neck than the Adam’s apple, nor up onto the cheek under the eye: and
4. Grown while on vacation, off -duty or otherwise away from the department. Members will not be
permitted to maintain an unprofessional appearance as a result of a simple failure to shave; and
5. Not interfere with the overall safety of the officer(s) or the mission of the department (i.e. proper fitting
of gas mask or other equipment); and
6. Members of the Honor Guard shall be cleanly shaven and not have a b eard or goatee while
participating in Honor Guard events.
