I. PURPOSE:
The purpose of this general order is to provide guidelines and procedures for arrests. An officer's decision
in the area of arrest has a strong impact on the Davie Police Department. An officer's decision on making
an arrest, and the manner in which the arrest is handled, if contrary to law, may lead to the charges being
dismissed; the officer and the department being vulnerable to public criticism and subject to civil action. It
is impossible to address every arrest situation that an officer may encounter. Therefore, an officer should
make arrest decisions based on probable cause, applicable laws, court decisions, and totality of the
circumstances.
