Coronado Police Department Coronado PD Policy Manual LAW ENFORCEMENT CODE OF ETHICS As a law enforcement officer, my fundamental duty is to serve the community; to safeguard lives and property; to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation and the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to respect the constitutional rights of all to liberty, equality and justice. I will keep my private life unsullied as an example to all and will behave in a manner that does not bring discredit to me or to my agency. I will maintain courageous calm in the face of danger, scorn or ridicule; develop self-restraint; and be constantly mindful of the welfare of others. Honest in thought and deed both in my personal and official life, I will be exemplary in obeying the law and the regulations of my department. Whatever I see or hear of a confidential nature or that is confided to me in my official capacity will be kept ever secret unless revelation is necessary in the performance of my duty. I will never act officiously or permit personal feelings, prejudices, political beliefs, aspirations, animosities or friendships to influence my decisions. With no compromise for crime and with relentless prosecution of criminals, I will enforce the law courteously and appropriately without fear or favor, malice or ill will, never employing unnecessary force or violence and never accepting gratuities. I recognize the badge of my office as a symbol of public faith, and I accept it as a public trust to be held so long as I am true to the ethics of police service. I will never engage in acts of corruption or bribery, nor will I condone such acts by other police officers. I will cooperate with all legally authorized agencies and their representatives in the pursuit of justice. I know that I alone am responsible for my own standard of professional performance and will take every reasonable opportunity to enhance and improve my level of knowledge and competence. I will constantly strive to achieve these objectives and ideals, dedicating myself before God to my chosen profession... law enforcement. Copyright Lexipol, LLC 2025/11/06, All Rights Reserved. We are committed to uphold that trust by maintaining the highest ethical standards as set forth in the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics. We are partners with our fellow citizens in the prevention of crime and resolution of mutual concerns. We recognize we are only effective through the creation of mutual trust and effort by all members of the community. We are guided by these primary values. Integrity Our actions shall reflect the highest level of integrity. We recognize the badge of our office is a symbol of public faith and trust. We will strive to earn that trust every day. We value the reputation of our agency and the law enforcement profession, yet promote honesty over loyalty. The Department will promptly and thoroughly investigate allegations of impropriety, and will take action against those who violate our commitment to integrity. We are accountable for our actions, both on and off duty. Members of management are accountable as role models to others in the organization. Supervisors have a responsibility to ensure the actions of those they lead live up to our standards. Teamwork We are a dynamic team of individuals who possess a wide array of talents and strengths. In order for our team to grow and be successful, we will respect each other, the leadership of the agency and follow directives to the best of our ability. Good team members are like good explorers. They keep an open mind, looking for solutions and improvement. We recognize that growth and learning may be spawned by honest mistakes. Respect We are committed to respecting the laws we enforce, and earning the respect of the community. We give all members of the community the respect that we, in turn, desire from them. We strive to be sensitive to the needs of the public. No crime should go unrecognized, nor should the requests of citizens be taken lightly. Each incident should be dealt with flexibility, with compassion and dedication to the premise that we solve problems, rather than just providing temporary relief. We respect our fellow employees and supervisors, and work together in an effective, professional manner to provide a safe environment for the people of Coronado. Professionalism We value professionalism, having a clear sense of commitment, perspective and direction. We are proud of our accomplishments as an integral part of the community.
