I. POLICY
This General Order provides uniform officers assigned to patrol, and those detectives assigned to
the Aventura Police Department's Specialized Services Division, with guidelines to assist in
conducting preliminary, follow-up, and special investigations involving criminal acts committed in
the City.
II. ORGANIZATION OF THE CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIONS UNIT (CIU)
A. The detectives have the responsibility of investigating crimes that are committed in the City
of Aventura. This includes assisting officers with the preliminary investigation; conducting
the follow-up investigation; identifying and apprehending the offender; collecting,
preserving, analyzing and evaluating evidence; recovering stolen property; interviewing
victims and witnesses; interrogating suspects; determining the exact circumstances of the
offense; determining if other crimes have been committed by the suspect; reporting
information obtained; and preparing cases for court presentation.
1. Homicide - Detectives investigate all homicides, attempted homicides, suicides, and
suspicious and accidental deaths.
2. Sexual Battery and Child Abuse - Detectives investigate sexual battery, felony and
misdemeanor sex crimes, adult and child neglect and abuse, and adult and juvenile
missing persons. Specific information addressing adult and juvenile missing persons is
located in General Order 403 - Missing Persons.
3. Robbery - Detectives investigate all forms of robberies committed in the City of
Aventura.
4. Bomb and Arson - Detectives conduct follow-up criminal investigations for bomb
threats, explosions, arson cases, and fires of unknown origin. Detectives handle
criminal aspects of an arson case, while the Miami-Dade Fire Department handles its
origin.
5. Economic Crimes - Detectives investigate a wide variety of white-collar crimes
including, fraud, computer crimes, embezzlement, worthless documents, etc.
6. General Investigations - Detectives investigate a wide-variety of other crimes such
as aggravated assault, aggravated battery (where death is not likely), kidnapping,
abduction, burglary, theft, etc.
7. The Criminal Investigations Unit is responsible for conducting intra-departmental
research of crimes, and related solvability ratios that occur within the boundaries of
Aventura.
