Policy Text
I. POLICY:
The Atlantis Police Department will respond to all
emergencies occurring within the City regarding
bomb threats or actual explosives. This policy
establishes guidelines for the response to and
handling of bomb threats or suspected incendiary
devices or explosives.
A. General
The Communications Unit will normally handle bomb
threats called into the police department. In an
instance where an employee other than
Communications personnel receives a bomb threat
call, every effort should be made to obtain the
needed information without transferring the caller to
another telephone. The following guidelines should
be followed when taking a bomb threat by telephone.
1. Bomb threats only (no actual device yet
discovered). Obtain as much detailed information as
possible. Notify the on-duty supervisor immediately.
Dispatch units to the location of the threat. Green
Acres Fire Department and the Palm Beach County
Sheriff’s Office will be notified of the threat, including
the location of the threat, the alleged time of the
explosion if available, and any other information
available. If the location of the bomb threat is a
July 2009 1
business, officers will respond to the business to
notify the owner or manager. If the location of the
threat is JFK Medical Center, the on-duty security
supervisor will be notified. The Medical Center has
their own policies in place to handle bomb threats to
their facility.
2. If the location of the threat is the Police
Department, City Hall, the Council Chambers, Water
Plant or any other City property, the Chief of Police
will also be notified. After conferring with the on-duty
supervisor, he will decide if the City Manager or the
Mayor will be notified.
