I. POLICY: The Atlantis Police Department has specific guidelines for the pursuit of motor vehicles and specifies when an officer and/or supervisor should initiate or terminate a vehicle pursuit and the responsibilities of the initiating officer, the supervisor, the dispatcher, and any other involved police vehicles. The guidelines are intended to guide the officers in the safe and reasonable performance of their duties. The exemptions from certain traffic laws granted to police officers who are engaged in emergency vehicle operations are provided to assist them to save lives rather than to place them at risk.
