Published with permission by CSU Police DepartmentLaw Enforcement Code of Ethics - 1Law Enforcement Code of Ethics 104.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE The purpose of this policy is to ensure that all department members are aware of their individual responsibilities to maintain their integrity and that of their department at all times. 104.2 POLICY CSU Police Department members are entrusted by the Chief of Police and community to serve with the highest professional standards.All members shall be issued and sign a code of ethics upon hire and prior to assuming operational duties. 104.3 LAW ENFORCEMENT CODE OF ETHICS To ensure that all peace officers are fully aware of their individual responsibilities to maintain their own integrity and that of their agency, every peace officer, during basic training, or at the time of appointment, shall be administered the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics (11 CCR 1013). AS A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER, my fundamental duty is to serve; to safeguard lives and property; to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against abuse or disorder; and to respect the constitutional rights of all to liberty, equality and justice. I WILL keep my private life unsullied as an example to all; maintain courageous calm in the face of danger, scorn, or ridicule; develop self-restraint; and be constantly mindful of the welfare of others. Honest in thought and deed in both my personal and official life, I will be exemplary in obeying the laws of the land and the regulations of my department. Whatever I see or hear of a confidential nature or that is confided to me in my official capacity will be kept ever secret unless revelation is necessary in the performance of my duty. I WILL never act officiously or permit personal feelings, prejudices, animosities or friendships to influence my decisions. With no compromise for crime and with relentless prosecution of criminals, I will enforce the law courteously and appropriately without fear or favor, malice or ill will, never employing unnecessary force or violence and never accepting gratuities. I RECOGNIZE the badge of my office as a symbol of public faith, and I accept it as a public trust to be held so long as I am true to the ethics of the police service. I will constantly strive to achieve these objectives and ideals, dedicating myself before god to my chosen profession... law enforcement. 104.3.1 OBJECTION TO RELIGIOUS AFFIRMATION Reference to religious affirmation in the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics may be omitted where objected to by the officer. Published with permission by CSU Police DepartmentLaw Enforcement Code of Ethics - 2104.4 PROFESSIONAL CODE OF ETHICS To ensure that all professional department members are fully aware of their individual responsibilities to maintain their own integrity and that of their agency, every professional member shall be administered the Professional Civilian Code of Ethics at the time of appointment. I will abide by the following Code of Ethics: AS A PROFESSIONAL DEPARTMENT MEMBER, my fundamental duty is to serve my community; and respect the constitutional rights of liberty, equality and justice. I will adhere to all applicable laws, regulations and agency policies. I SHALL TREAT all individuals with dignity and respect to ensure my actions are dedicated to supporting the safety of my community. I SHALL DEMONSTRATE standards of behavior consistent with the responsibilities, duties, obligations and functions of a CSU Police Department member as outlined for my specific job/role within the department by performing my duties in a competent, courteous, and professional manner. I SHALL ADHERE at all times to the standards and principles of honesty and integrity as an example to all, and will act in a professional manner whenever dealing with items or information in the performance of my duties that are confidential in nature. I SHALL ENSURE that during my tenure I will not use my position as a CSU Police Department member for personal gain. I ACCEPT and will adhere to this Code of Ethics, so doing, I also accept responsibility for encouraging others in my role to abide by this code. 104.5 ETHICS TRAINING All CSU Police Department members shall receive training relative to the importance of the code of ethics during individualized Field Training or new employee orientation / training, and will also be subject to additional training through one or more of the following means annually thereafter: Briefing training, computer-based training, bulletins, or formalized In-Service training.
