Published with permission by CSU Police DepartmentCommendations and Awards - 1Commendations and Awards 1007.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE This policy provides general guidelines for recognizing commendable or meritorious acts of members of the CSU Police Department and individuals from the community. 1007.2 POLICY It is the policy of the CSU Police Department to recognize and acknowledge exceptional individual and team achievements, performance, proficiency, heroism and service of its members and individuals from the community through commendations and awards. 1007.3 AWARDS AND COMMENDATIONS CSU Systemwide awards and/or department commendations for members of the Department or for individuals from the community may be submitted to the Chief of Police or designee by any department member or by any person from the community at any time throughout the calendar year. 1007.4 DOCUMENTATION Managers, supervisors, and members of the Department are encouraged to document meritorious or commendable acts to the Chief of Police or designee. Documentation of a meritorious or commendable act submitted by a community member should also be accepted in any form. However, written documentation is preferred. The documentation should contain: (a)Identifying information: 1.For members of the Department - name, division and assignment at the date and time of the meritorious or commendable act 2.For individuals from the community - name, address, telephone number (b)A brief account of the meritorious or commendable act with report numbers, as applicable. (c)The name of the member submitting the documentation. 1007.5 DEPARTMENT COMMENDATIONS Department Commendations (certificate) may be bestowed upon members of the Department and/or community members by the Chief of Police throughout each calendar year. 1007.5.1 CRITERIA FOR DEPARTMENT COMMENDATIONS The criteria for a Department Commendation may include, but is not limited to: •Department Commendation: Superior handling of a difficult situation, outstanding performance, and/or exceptional action(s) that is above and beyond typical duties. Published with permission by CSU Police DepartmentCommendations and Awards - 21007.5.2 PROCESSING DOCUMENTATION Documentation submitted regarding the meritorious or commendable act of a member of the Department or community member should be forwarded in a timely manner to the appropriate Division Commander for review. The Division Commander shall review the submission and provide the Chief of Police or designee their recommendation for issuing a Department Commendation. The Chief of Police or the authorized designee will present approved commendations to department members. A copy of the Department Commendation (certificate) will also be placed into the member's personnel file. The Chief of Police may also submit a department employee and/or community member who receives a Department Commendation during each calendar year for consideration of an annual CSU Systemwide Police Award when the commendation meets the criteria for a systemwide award. 1007.6 ASSIGNMENT PINS Authorized unit pins may be worn when an officer is assigned to one of the Department's specialized units. These specified units include: (a)Field Training Officer (FTO) (b)Critical Response Unit (CRU) (c)Motor Officer Unit (Motor Wings) (d)Other assignments authorized by the Chief of Police. These unit pins shall only be worn during an officer's assignment to the unit. 1007.7 AWARDS ISSUED BY OUTSIDE ENTITIES Award medals or pins given to an officer by an outside entity may be worn when authorized by the Chief of Police. Awards issued by outside entities include, but are not limited to: (a)Stolen Vehicle Recovery Award (10851 CVC): Issued annually by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in conjunction with the California Automobile Association (CSAA). (b)Drivers Arrested Under the Influence Award (23152 CVC): Issued annually by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). 1007.8 PRIOR AGENCY AWARDS Awards conferred to individual members by P.O.S.T. certified law enforcement agencies during previous tours of duty may be worn with Class A uniforms upon prior approval by the Chief of Police or their designee. Published with permission by CSU Police DepartmentCommendations and Awards - 31007.9 CSU SYSTEMWIDE POLICE AWARDS CSU Systemwide Police Awards may be bestowed by the Chancellor's Office be-annually upon members of the Department and/or individuals from the community. Multiple acts occurring during the same incident will be considered for a single award, with the exceptions of the Medal of Honor or Purple Heart which may be awarded concurrently with the Medal of Valor. 1007.9.1 CRITERIA The criteria for a CSU Systemwide Award may include, but is not limited to: •Medal of Valor: This award may be conferred annually by the Chancellor's Office to a department member(s) who demonstrates conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity under hazardous circumstances and at great risk to their life and safety above and beyond the call to duty, where the department member is aware of the danger while engaged in a
