Si tienes un auto que fue hecho a medida, reconstruido o que proviene de otro país, debes decirlo al registrarlo. A veces, puedes mantener los papeles de registro de otro estado si los necesitas.

Es como si estuvieras mudando a una nueva casa y necesitas llevar contigo tus documentos importantes, pero también debes mostrarle al nuevo dueño de la casa que tienes todo en regla.

Imagina que Juan compró un auto antiguo de un amigo en California. Cuando Juan quiere registrar el auto en Míchigan, debe entregar todos los papeles de registro de California. Sin embargo, si Juan decide conservar el registro de California porque viaja mucho, solo necesita mostrar esos documentos a las autoridades de Míchigan.

MCL 257.218 - Specially constructed, reconstructed, or foreign vehicle; application for registration; fees Sec. 218. (1) If a vehicle to be registered is a specially constructed, reconstructed, or foreign vehicle, that fact shall be stated in the application. With reference to each foreign vehicle which has been previously registered in another state, the owner shall surrender to the secretary of state all registration plates, registration certificates, and certificates of title or other evidence of foreign registration, as are in the owner's possession or under the owner's control, except as provided in subsections (2) and (3). (2) If the owner in the course of interstate operation of a vehicle desires to retain registration of a vehicle in another state, the owner shall not be required to surrender, but shall submit for inspection, evidence of the foreign registration and the secretary of state, upon a proper showing and upon application and payment of the registration fee, shall register the vehicle in this state. (3) If the owner of a vehicle previously registered in another state in which the certificate of title or other proof of ownership of a vehicle is in the possession of a holder of a security interest in the vehicle, the owner of the vehicle may apply to the secretary of state for registration of the vehicle for this state after payment of all fees required by this act and submission of proof of ownership of the vehicle to the secretary of state.
