Explicación Simple

Si un vehículo no es seguro o no cumple con las reglas, el departamento de vehículos puede cancelar su registro. Esto significa que no podrás usarlo legalmente hasta que lo arregles.

Es como si tuvieras una bicicleta que no frena bien. Si no la arreglas, no podrás usarla hasta que esté segura para montar.

Ejemplo Práctico

Imagina que Juan tiene un camión que usa para su negocio, pero no ha pagado multas por violaciones de tráfico. Al recibir un aviso de la policía, el departamento de vehículos cancela el registro del camión de Juan. Ahora no puede usarlo hasta que pague las multas.

Penalidades

El registro será cancelado y no podrás usar el vehículo hasta que cumplas con las condiciones requeridas.

C.R.S. 42-3-120 – Department may cancel or deny registration (1) The department shall cancel the registration of any vehicle that the department determines is unsafe or unfit to be operated or is not equipped as required by law. (2) The department shall cancel the registration of a vehicle whenever the person to whom registration number plates have been issued unlawfully uses or permits the unlawful use of the same. (3) Intentionally left blank —Ed. (a) Upon receiving written notice from the Colorado state patrol that a motor carrier has failed to timely pay civil penalties imposed in accordance with section 42-4-235 (2) or has failed to cooperate with the completion of a safety compliance review pursuant to section 42-4-235 (2)(c), the department shall: (I) Cancel the registration of any vehicle that is owned by the carrier; (II) [Editor’s note: Subsection (3)(a)(II) is effective April 30, 2024.] Enter both the motor carrier and its vehicles as out-of-service in the federal motor carrier safety administration system of record; and (III) Deny the registration of any vehicle that is owned by the carrier until the department receives notice from the Colorado state patrol that the penalty has been paid in full or that the carrier has cooperated with the completion of the safety compliance review, as applicable.
